The Real Car
The real car behind this model is the Porsche 911 (993) GT2 of the German Roock Racing Team, which competed in 1996 for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The car won the LM-GT2 class at the time and finished 12th in the general classification. He was piloted by the legendary trio Ralf Kelleners, Bruno Eichmann and Guy Martinolle.
Specifications of the real race car
Base: Based on the iconic air-cooled Porsche 993 Turbo, but extremely stripped for weight saving (-205 kg compared to the standard Turbo).
Engine: A 3.6-liter biturbo flat-six (boxer engine) equipped with KKK turbochargers and mandatory restrictors.
Power: About 450 hp to 475 hp.
Drive: Unlike the all-wheel-drive Turbo, the GT2 had purely rear-wheel drive to comply with the racing regulations (hence the name GT2).
Porsche
Appearance: Characteristic were the huge bolt-mounted widened wheel arches (to accommodate the wide racing slicks) and the giant rear wing with extra air intakes for the intercoolers.
Livery: The fire-red color with the distinctive white and blue "Finacor" stickering (a French financial institution that was the main sponsor at the time).
What makes this car legendary?
The 993 GT2 marked the end of an era as one of the very last, purest air-cooled turbo racing cars Porsche ever built. Because of its brutal, unforgettable driving behavior (a lot of power on the rear wheels without modern electronic tools) the street version of this homologation car quickly got the terrifying nickname "The Widowmaker."
